From Mr Universe to Everyday Health: Steph Stinton’s Experience with Probiotic Foods

Probiotic Foods wholefood probiotic and magnesium supporting nutrition, performance and everyday wellbeing.

What happens when you put your body through months of intense training, travel halfway around the world, compete at an elite level and then expect it to recover and keep going?

For competitive bodybuilder Steph Stinton, this wasn't a hypothetical question. It was exactly what he experienced when he travelled to Australia to compete for the Mr Universe title.

Competition preparation can place enormous demands on the body. Training is intense, nutrition becomes highly controlled and the physical demands are often combined with travel, disrupted routines, pressure and very little downtime. For Steph, there was also the expectation that once the competition was over, life and work would continue almost immediately.

In a Probiotic Foods interview, Steph shared what he noticed after introducing Probiotic Foods products into his routine during this period.

Competing for Mr Universe in Australia

Steph travelled from the UK to Australia with one clear goal: to compete for the Mr Universe title.

He describes the trip as an intense period, with the stress of competition followed almost immediately by a busy weekend of commitments. After flying halfway around the world, he returned home and went virtually straight back to work.

What surprised him was how he felt when he got there.

After previous competitions and long trips, Steph says he would normally expect to feel bloated, lethargic and exhausted. Competition preparation could leave him feeling depleted, and recovery wasn't always quick.

This time, however, his experience was different.

Steph reported that he was able to return to his normal routine almost immediately. He also said he didn't pick up the illnesses or viruses he would normally expect around such a demanding period, and instead felt ready to start looking towards his next event.

For an athlete accustomed to how his body usually responded after competition, that difference stood out.

When Good Nutrition Becomes Even More Important

You don't need to be preparing for Mr Universe to understand what it feels like when life asks a little too much from your body.

For some people, it's intense training. For others, it's work deadlines, raising a family, travelling, disrupted sleep or simply trying to fit too much into an already busy week.

The circumstances may be different, but the underlying principle remains the same: when demand increases, nutrition matters.

Food provides the energy and nutrients our bodies require for normal function, while adequate sleep, hydration, movement and recovery all form part of the bigger picture.

This is particularly relevant for athletes because training itself is only one part of performance. What happens between training sessions matters too.

Steph's Experience With Energy and Training

One of the biggest differences Steph described was how he felt during and after training.

After years of experience in bodybuilding, he knew what it felt like to reach the later stages of competition preparation. As an event approached and dietary restrictions intensified, he would normally begin to feel increasingly drained.

Yet during the period discussed in the interview, he reported feeling unusually energetic.

Steph described wanting to train again within minutes of finishing a workout and spoke about experiencing what felt to him like an acceleration in his training.

That's a significant statement from someone who had already been training for around a decade.

What his experience highlights also, is something we sometimes forget when chasing fitness goals: performance isn't only about what you do in the gym.

Your body also needs adequate nutrition and recovery outside it.

The Gut's Role in Nutrition

This is where the Probiotic Foods philosophy becomes particularly relevant.

You can spend enormous amounts of time thinking about what you eat, but digestion is another important part of the nutritional picture.

Our digestive system breaks food down so nutrients can be absorbed and used throughout the body. The gut microbiome — the enormous community of microorganisms living primarily in the digestive tract — also plays an important role in digestion and everyday health.

This is one reason Probiotic Foods has always taken a food-first approach to probiotics.

Rather than simply placing isolated microorganisms into a capsule, our wholefood blends begin with selected foods that undergo a natural fermentation process using food-cultured microorganisms. Today's Everyone Blend, for example, contains 18 fermented wholefood ingredients and is made without dairy, GMO ingredients, colours, flavours, preservatives or fillers.

It's a philosophy we've followed since 2006: combine good food with fermentation and make it simple enough to become part of an everyday routine.

The Sleep Change Steph Didn't Expect

Perhaps one of the most interesting parts of Steph's story wasn't about bodybuilding at all.

It was about sleep.

Steph said he'd always struggled to relax and sleep properly. Before introducing the products discussed in the interview, he described getting as little as one to one-and-a-half hours of sleep.

After beginning the magnesium product, he reported noticing a substantial difference within just a few days, saying he was able to sleep for around five to six hours.

For someone training and competing at his level, that change would have felt significant.

Sleep is one of the foundations of recovery, yet it's often the first thing sacrificed when life becomes busy. While supplements aren't a substitute for healthy sleep habits and persistent sleep difficulties should be appropriately investigated, magnesium itself is an essential mineral involved in numerous normal physiological processes.

Probiotic Foods still offers a magnesium formulation today alongside its fermented wholefood range.

Steph's experience with it remains exactly that — his experience — but it reinforces the bigger lesson running throughout his story: sometimes supporting performance begins with supporting the foundations.

Another Athlete Put It to the Test

Steph wasn't the only experienced athlete interviewed in the video.

A second bodybuilder, who said she'd been training for approximately ten years, had introduced the products around four months earlier as she began her competition diet.

She described the difference as significant, particularly in her general health, how she felt and the energy she had available for training.

What stood out to her was the timing.

Normally, by the stage of competition preparation she had reached, she would expect to be feeling drained. Instead, with only a couple of weeks remaining before competition, she said she still had plenty of energy.

She also explained that she'd always been interested in health, ate what she considered a healthy diet and had tried other nutritional products previously. In her personal experience, however, she felt the Probiotic Foods she was using at the time had made a noticeable difference.

And there is a common theme throughout both stories: they weren't only thinking about building muscle. They were thinking about health.

Health First, Performance Second

This may be the most valuable lesson in the entire video.

It's easy to look at elite athletes and focus on the visible result: the muscle, the conditioning, the trophies and the hours spent training.

But underneath performance is a human body that still needs the basics.

It needs nourishing food, adequate hydration and quality sleep. It needs periods of recovery, sufficient nutrients and a digestive system capable of doing its everyday work.

For everyday people, the goal may have nothing to do with stepping onto a bodybuilding stage. You may simply want enough energy to get through your afternoon without crashing, recover better after your morning walk or gym session, sleep more soundly, feel less sluggish or support your digestion.

The scale is different, but the foundations remain remarkably similar.

Why Fermented Wholefoods?

Humans have been fermenting foods for thousands of years, long before probiotic capsules appeared on supermarket shelves.

Fermentation uses microorganisms to transform foods, and fermented foods can contain microorganisms as well as compounds produced during the fermentation process.

This traditional relationship between food and fermentation sits at the heart of Probiotic Foods.

Our philosophy is simple: Nutrition from Nature.

Today's Probiotic Foods range includes several blends designed for different dietary needs. The Everyone Blend, for example, contains a combination of fermented ingredients including spirulina, lentils, chickpeas, mung beans, linseed, adzuki beans, amaranth, sweet potato, pepitas, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, quinoa, ginger, beetroot, cabbage and molasses.

There are also dedicated blends for women and people with more sensitive dietary requirements, as well as powder and capsule options.

The aim isn't to replace a nutritious diet. It's to sit alongside it.

You Don't Have to Be an Athlete to Support Your Body

One of the things we love about finding stories like Steph's in the archives is that they remind us how universal the foundations of health really are.

Most of us aren't preparing for Mr Universe.

But we are asking a lot from ourselves.

We work, raise families, exercise, travel, deal with stress, sleep too little some nights and then expect ourselves to wake up and do it all again the next morning.

Sometimes the answer isn't another extreme health protocol. It may simply be looking more closely at the foundations we've allowed to slip.

Are you eating enough real food? Are you supporting your digestion? Are you drinking enough good-quality water? Are you sleeping well? Are you allowing yourself to recover from exercise rather than simply pushing harder?

And importantly, are the things you're doing for your health something you can actually continue doing?

Consistency Beats the Quick Fix

There's another detail in this old interview that's easy to miss.

The second athlete had been taking the products for approximately four months.

This echoes something we saw in our archived 5 Cases Blood Microscopy video, where participants were revisited after several months rather than several days.

That's an important reminder in a wellness industry that often promises instant transformation.

Nutrition works best when we think about what we're doing consistently.

One healthy meal doesn't create a healthy diet, just as one poor meal doesn't destroy one. One good night's sleep won't completely restore months of exhaustion, and one supplement isn't going to compensate for a lifestyle that continually works against your health.

The small choices you make most days are what build your foundations.

How Probiotic Foods Can Help

Probiotic Foods has evolved since Steph's original interview, but the philosophy behind the brand remains grounded in wholefood nutrition and natural fermentation.

Today, our range includes fermented wholefood probiotic blends for different people and dietary needs, along with nutritional products such as magnesium and green barley. For those wanting a simple combination, the Everyone Magic Trio brings together the Everyone Blend, Green Barley and Magnesium.

If you're new to Probiotic Foods, you don't need to begin with everything at once.

Start with the foundations, choose the product that best suits your needs and give yourself time to build it into your daily routine.

The Bigger Lesson From Steph's Mr Universe Experience

Steph went to Australia to compete at an extraordinary level, but what makes his story interesting more than two decades later isn't simply the title he was chasing.

It's how he said he felt.

He described returning from an intensely demanding trip without the usual exhaustion he'd expected, slipping back into his routine, feeling energised during training and noticing a substantial improvement in his sleep after introducing magnesium.

His story leaves us with a principle that applies whether you're an elite athlete or simply trying to feel better in everyday life:

The more we ask from our bodies, the more important it becomes to look after the foundations.

Good food, good digestion, movement, hydration, sleep, recovery and consistent nutrition may not be as exciting as the latest health trend, but they're the things we come back to again and again.

More than 20 years later, that's still what Probiotic Foods stands for.

Nutrition from Nature.
